The song “Thriller” that Michael Jackson popularized was released on November 30, 1982 and became the best selling album of all time; until now, nothing beats “Thriller”. The album tiled “Thriller” won eight Grammy Awards and spent 37 consecutive weeks at number one on Billboard 200. Thriller sold 120 million copies worldwide, selling one millions copies per week at its peak.
Before Thriller, Michael Jackson had struggled to get air time on MTV. They just did not play music from black artists. There was a lot of pressure on MTV, including from CBS Recods president at that time, who threat end to stop releasing videos from other artists if MTV won’t play Michael Jackson.
Of course MTV did not want to be looked at as racist medium and decided to play music video Beat it and Thriller. This was a major success for Michael alone, confirmation that all his hard work was finally paying of and also for other black artists which after Michael could be presented on MTV.
Thriller Music Video was a masterpiece by itself. Its original version was over 14 minutes long. At that time no music video had come even close to that. But it was not only the lenght of the video that made it so special. It was the production of Thriller video, the show, the costumes, the story that made it so popular. Michael started a movement with it, that is going today and for generations to come.
The song “Thriller” was also featured in the movie “13 Going on 30” starred Jennifer Garner.
What I like about this song is the phenomenal dance step where the Cebu Inmates became popular around the world. Indeed it had become one of the best and most viewed videos in YouTube
The online game “Plants vs Zombies” was inspired by Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” and his avatar can be seen as an antagonist zombie that calls for more zombies while dancing. The online game “Plants vs Zombies” was inspired by Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” and his avatar can be seen as an antagonist zombie that calls for more zombies while dancing.
Indeed, “Thriller” video listed in the Guiness World Records as the most successful music video in the world in 2006.
